CYDC Hosts Community Event to Support Homeless Youth

NOTE: As of Feb. 29, 2024, Carolina Youth Development Center (CYDC) has rebranded to Landmarks for Families. Our nonprofit, community programs and residential services remain committed to cultivating thriving youth and families in this new chapter.

Carolina Youth Development Center (CYDC) is teaming up with local organizations, One80 Place and Lowcountry Continuum of Care, to support youth ages 12 – 24 who are experiencing homelessness.

A series of drop-in events will be held at CYDC’s North Charleston campus on Thursday, July 15, July 29 and August 12 from 1 – 4 pm. Youth who attend will receive free snacks, free personal hygiene products, as well as referrals for services. The drop-in event will also provide the youth with information about obtaining necessary identification and housing documents, locating affordable housing, and additional information on community resources.

“CYDC serves numerous youth experiencing homelessness in our Charleston Emergency Shelter but we know there are more living in our community we’d like to help,” said Beverly Hardin, CEO of CYDC. “Youth may experience homelessness for a variety of reasons, including aging out of foster care, family disruptions or economic reasons. Giving youth access to support and services at this critical time in early adulthood can help put them on the path to leading successful lives. Through our partnership with 180 Place and Lowcountry Continuum of Care, we are able to open our campus to reach more youth in need of support.”

CYDC currently serves youth experiencing homelessness through the Charleston Emergency Shelter (CES). Youth ages 12 to 17 are provided a safe and stable place to stay for up to 21 days with the goal of reunifying with a parent/guardian or family member or securing permanent housing.
