National Homeless Awareness Month

Acknowledging National Homeless Awareness Month: A Call to Support Vulnerable Children and Families in South Carolina

November is National Homeless Youth Awareness Month; a month to acknowledge and raise awareness for the more than 2.5 million young people who experience homelessness each year. Since its declaration in 2007, November has become a month to recognize the unique struggles of homeless children and families and shine a light on the efforts needed to support them.

Homelessness is more than the loss of a physical home; it also represents the loss of community, friends, familiar routines, and a critical sense of stability and safety. For many of our residents, this instability often leads to serious emotional and physical challenges. Arriving in search of stability, support, and compassion, families and individuals in South Carolina look to Landmarks for Families as a guiding light from homelessness, a place where they can begin to rebuild their lives with dignity and hope.

Landmarks for Families is making the difference.

Young adults aging out of foster care face an especially harsh reality, often marching toward homelessness at a staggering rate. According to the National Institute of Health, about 46% of young adults who have been in foster care experience homelessness by the age of 26. Every program at Landmarks for Families is designed to erase this grim trajectory, from our educational initiatives to preservation services that keep families whole and prevent entry into the foster care system. Our residential and community programs help teens who have experienced out-of-home placement find permanent homes and assist families in preparing these young adults for a successful transition to adulthood.

We meet families and teens exactly where they are, guiding them toward brighter futures so they can thrive. When families need help, they come to Landmarks for Families because we are the change agents and responders, strategically positioned to recognize and meet the needs of each child and family in the exact moment their story intersects with ours. Through our education, preservation, residential, and reunification programs, we help children and families break old patterns and create new pathways to overcome the challenges holding them back.

The Journey to Stability and Hope.

This November, as we observe National Homeless Youth Awareness Month, it’s crucial to remember the millions of young people and families facing homelessness. The journey out of homelessness is not only about providing shelter but also about addressing the trauma and instability that accompany it. As a community, we can make a significant impact by supporting organizations like Landmarks for Families and advocating for comprehensive solutions that bring lasting stability and hope.

Landmarks for Families helps families build and maintain the stability needed to keep their homes by offering resources and guidance. Together, we can continue to advocate for and assist the vulnerable members of our community, creating a future where all young people and families are safe, secure, and supported.
