Sometimes children face an unsafe household and they must be removed from the home for their own protection.
When this happens, CYDC provides a secure, caring environment to help improve their outlook and well-being, and keep
them on the right path in school and in life.
15-year old North Charleston High School (NCHS) freshman Angela* came to Carolina Youth Development Center’s Charleston Emergency Shelter on October 7, 2015, the victim of neglect. She had lived with relatives for a while, but it didn’t work out, landing her in foster care.
As one might imagine with a teenager placed in her position, Angela lost focus in school at first and her grades suffered.
With support and encouragement from CYDC staff and her academic mentor, she turned things around towards the end of the school year, but it was too late for her to earn admittance into her high school of choice, Garrett Academy of Technology.
However, Angela did not give up. CYDC staff continued to work with her and now she is thriving.
Not only have her grades improved, Angela made all A’s during the first quarter of the 2016-17 academic year at NCHS, and is optimistic she can eventually attain her goal of transferring to Garrett Academy to finish high school and set the foundation for the rest of her life.
