April is Child Abuse Prevention Month: A Time to Stand Together for South Carolina’s Children

April is recognized as Child Abuse Prevention Month, a time to raise awareness, take action, and reflect on how we can create a safer, more nurturing world for our children.

At Landmarks for Families, our mission is grounded in the belief that every child deserves to grow up in a safe, loving, and supportive home. Yet, too many children across our state face a different reality.

According to the South Carolina Department of Social Services, more than 11,800 children in our state were victims of physical abuse, physical neglect, or sexual abuse in 2024. These are not just numbers—they represent children in our neighborhoods, our schools, and our communities right here in the Lowcountry who are experiencing trauma no child should ever endure.

We’re here to break that cycle.

Strengthening Families Through Education and Support

One of the most effective ways to prevent abuse and neglect is by equipping families with the tools, resources, and support before a crisis happens. Family Education and Prevention is a cornerstone of our work at Landmarks for Families.

Our family support services offer parenting classes, emotional wellness workshops, and one-on-one coaching to caregivers. We walk alongside struggling families, empowering them with knowledge, skills, and encouragement so they can create stable, nurturing environments where children can thrive.

Because when families are strong, children are safe.

A Place of Healing for Displaced Youth

For children and teens who cannot remain safely at home, our residential services provide the care and support they need to begin healing. These young people have often endured severe trauma and are navigating the complex emotions that come with being separated from their families and placed into the foster care system.

At Landmarks for Families, we provide more than just shelter—we offer a path to healing. Our trauma-informed approach includes mental health support, educational assistance, and life-skills development to help children not only recover but build a brighter future.

We are proud to be a trusted leader in Charleston and throughout the Lowcountry, supporting South Carolina’s foster care network and standing beside youth who need a steady, compassionate hand during their most vulnerable moments.

How You Can Help

This month, and every month, we invite you to join us in our mission to protect and uplift South Carolina’s children. Whether through volunteering, advocating, or donating, your support helps us

continue providing essential family support services and safe housing for displaced youth in our region.

Together, we can ensure that no child in the Lowcountry suffers in silence—and that every child has the chance to grow up in a safe, loving home.
