Celebrating Our Leaders: Honoring Peter Barton and Brit Swanson

At Landmarks for Families, we are honored to recognize the outstanding achievements of our two Board members, Peter Barton, Board Chair, and Brit Swanson, Board Treasurer, as they demonstrate outstanding leadership for our organization and the Charleston community.

Peter Barton: Selected as a Riley Fellow

Peter Barton’s selection as one of 42 Lowcountry leaders in the Riley Institute’s Diversity Leaders Initiative (DLI) is a testament to his dedication to fostering a more inclusive South Carolina. This five-month program equips leaders with the tools and perspectives to create meaningful social and economic progress through diversity and inclusion. Peter’s inclusion in this initiative reinforces his unwavering commitment to advancing these values, which are at the heart of our mission at Landmarks for Families.

Peter Barton serves as a director at Elliott Davis in Charleston, where he provides business advisory services to closely held businesses and professional management teams. His expertise spans financial leadership, succession planning, value enhancement, corporate governance, and financial modeling. With a B.S. in Corporate Finance from Clemson University and the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation, Peter’s professional journey includes experience as an analyst at a global investment management company. He is an active member of the CFA Institute and the South Carolina CFA Society and serves on the South Carolina CFA Society board.

Beyond his professional endeavors, Peter is deeply committed to community service. In addition to his role as Board Chair of Landmarks for Families, he volunteers with The First Tee of Greater Charleston, helping to shape the next generation of leaders.

The Riley Institute’s award-winning DLI program equips leaders like Peter with the tools needed to leverage diversity to improve organizational outcomes and drive social and economic progress in the state. Carefully selected leaders from all sectors participate in this unique, interactive curriculum that imparts deep knowledge and skills to manage and lead diverse workers and clients effectively. Graduates of DLI become Riley Fellows and join a network of over 2,800 South Carolinians

Brit Swanson: Leadership Charleston Class of 2025

We are thrilled to celebrate Brit Swanson’s acceptance into the Leadership Charleston Class of 2025. This program, hosted by the Charleston Metro Chamber, has shaped our region’s future leaders for over 50 years. Through community immersion and interactions with diverse leaders, Leadership Charleston cultivates leaders and advances the Charleston metro area. For the next ten months, Brit will connect with key community leaders and gain an understanding of the important issues that impact Charleston, from local government to economic development.

Brit Swanson is the Vice President for Commercial Banking at South State Bank. He brings a wealth of experience from his previous board-level work with a low-income housing agency in California, where he was based before moving to Charleston. His passion for serving children and families in need is evident in his dedication to Landmarks for Families and his commitment to making a meaningful impact in the community.

Brit’s participation in Leadership Charleston reflects his deep commitment to our community and drive to make a lasting impact. By immersing himself in this transformative experience, Brit will further enhance his ability to guide our financial strategies while forging connections that will strengthen our organization’s ability to serve our community’s most vulnerable families.
