NOTE: As of Feb. 29, 2024, Carolina Youth Development Center (CYDC) has rebranded to Landmarks for Families. Our nonprofit, community programs and residential services remain committed to cultivating thriving youth and families in this new chapter.
10-year old Cheryl* arrived at CYDC’s Charleston Emergency Shelter in August. Her mom and her had been homeless, and Cheryl was brought to us while the mother works to get back on her feet again. Cheryl has maintained no contact with her biological father, though she does have a relationship with her stepdad. Initially, she was an emotional wreck, crying every day about having to be separated from her family. She has felt the need to hoard things such as food, most likely stemming from the experience of not knowing when and from where her next meal would come.
However, Cheryl is now able to attend a family support group at church where she regularly visits with her mom and stepfather. According to residential staff, church has become an important part of her life. One staff member described her as a “sweet kid, very caring. An old soul,” who relates more to adults and works well with staff. In fact, she assists with cooking breakfast and other house tasks. Although she is still working on building a rapport with her fellow peers, she has become more comfortable and is making great progress.
Please consider donating to CYDC this holiday and helping us continue to make a positive impact in the lives of vulnerable children such as Cheryl. https://cydc.org/
