Creating a Sense of Home and Belonging During the Holidays

The holiday season is a time of joy, family and togetherness, though not all have the privilege of experiencing these feelings. For at-risk or displaced children, this time can be filled with uncertainty and instability, but it does not need to be that way. This time of year offers more than gifts and festive decorations – it is an opportunity to nurture a sense of home and belonging. With the proper support and resources, our community’s children can find comfort in knowing they are seen and that they matter.

NOTE: As of Feb. 29, 2024, Carolina Youth Development Center (CYDC) has rebranded to Landmarks for Families. Our nonprofit, community programs and residential services remain committed to cultivating thriving youth and families in this new chapter.

Hope: The Greatest Gift You Can Give

At Carolina Youth Development Center (CYDC), we have seen first-hand how even the smallest acts of kindness can bring about hope. One particular story from CYDC’s Christmas past stands out in our minds.

A child at our center was helping a team member sort through donated holiday items when they found an envelope addressed to our organization. They asked if they could open it and, upon doing so, discovered a wonderfully sweet message wishing them luck and wellness.

“I know you may be facing challenges now,” the letter shared. “But I believe in you”.

This small, compassionate act had such a positive impact on the child that it brought them to tears. It made them feel seen and appreciated as if the person writing the letter spoke directly to them.

It was a heartwarming moment for us all here at CYDC that continuously inspires us in our daily work. These tips can help you spark that same meaningful impact in your community’s youth this season.

A Spirit of Inclusion

Studies show that a sense of belonging is crucial for mental health, particularly among vulnerable populations. The true holiday magic is the spirit of inclusivity these times inspire. Communities coming together, families opening their hearts and individuals extending hands of kindness can profoundly impact at-risk children.

A Community of Support

For children facing adversity, the concept of “home” might extend beyond physical spaces. Communities play a pivotal role in shaping this sense of home. By actively participating in community events, fostering inclusive environments and supporting local initiatives, individuals contribute to creating a space where all feel welcome.

Traditions that Transcend

Family rituals” or routines can offer a positive impact on youth’s emotional wellness. Establishing holiday traditions fosters a sense of continuity and stability. For at-risk children, the predictability of these rituals can counterbalance the unpredictability they may face in other aspects of life.

Empowering Through Support

The holiday season offers a unique opportunity for individuals and families to extend their support to others in need. Collaborating with local organizations, donating to charities or volunteering time can directly impact at-risk children and families.

P.S. Looking to give back this season? Here’s how you can support our children and center.

Building Lasting Memories

Memories created during the holidays can linger in a child’s heart. Do you have a favorite holiday memory you still smile back on each year? It’s no surprise! Positive memories and the power of nostalgia have been shown to increase subjective well-being and our sense of gratitude. Whether it’s a shared meal, a small gift or a heartfelt gesture, these positive experiences help us create a brighter outlook on life.

A Ripple Effect of Hope

The holidays are a time to see another’s heart when they cannot see past their own trauma. Creating a magical moment for someone else only takes a little effort. Once they experience that magic, they want to experience it again. By embracing the true spirit of the season—connection, compassion, and community—we not only create a sense of home and belonging but also contribute to building a brighter, more inclusive future for everyone.
