Charleston and surrounding communities will now have more access to programs that strengthen families thanks to a Cummins Community Development Grant awarded to Carolina Youth Development Center (CYDC). The $55,000 grant will help CYDC to provide additional programs at CYDC’s Family Support Center.
The center will provide the larger Charleston and surrounding communities with resources and supports for parents and families including in-home visitations, individual and family therapy, caregiver support groups and workshops that help families involved in the child welfare system and heal and reunify when possible.
Earlier this month CYDC, an organization whose mission is to protect children, empower families and prepare youth for adulthood, received notification it had been awarded the Cummins Community Development Grant.
“This center has been a dream for our staff and our board of directors for a while now. As a team, we felt a responsibility and sense of urgency to offer more resources and opportunities for healing and help to the families in our community,” said Beverly Hardin, CYDC CEO. “Cummins has been a committed partner with CYDC for many years. Once again, they are making it possible for us to fill a much-needed gap in services, during a critical time. Now more than ever, families in our community need the supports this grant will make possible. We cannot thank the Cummins family enough.”

CYDC’s Family Support Center will be located on the North Charleston campus in the George W. Williams building, whose namesake was a chairman of the board in the 1920s and would later go on to earn the name “Angel of the Orphan House.”
The center and its programs will add to the numerous services CYDC’s community-based programs provide including afterschool care, Freedom School (a summer school program), the Strengthening Families Program and additional prevention services.
