Since the beginning of the 2021-2022 school year, Carolina Youth Development Center (CYDC) has provided additional academic support to youth as a result of a grant provided by Power:Ed, a nonprofit organization founded by South Carolina Student Loan Corp. The grant, awarded earlier this year, provided CYDC with $50,000 to hire a Residential Enrichment and Volunteer Services Coordinator for the organization’s Berkeley County Campus.
“During these challenging times, youth have experienced various unexpected disruptions to their academic routines. However, CYDC’s residents have overcome numerous obstacles to maintain and improve their academic standing despite these challenges and disruptions, largely due to the grant from Power:Ed,” said CYDC CEO Beverly Hardin. “This grant allowed us to continue to focus on education while many of them continue virtual learning. Our students have not only thrived but many have exceeded their academic goals while on our campus.”
CYDC’s Residential Enrichment and Volunteer Services Coordinator was hired in August of 2021 and completes academic assessments with each resident, coordinates the Teen After-School Center at CYDC’s Callen-Lacey Center for Children and ensures that youth are engaging in activities to enhance their well-being, including financial literacy courses, physical activities and emotional regulation skill-building groups.
