In Berkeley County, the spirit of community runs deep. Here, families, neighbors and organizations unite to provide vital support services for youth and families that create a nurturing environment where every child has the opportunity to thrive. In an effort to realize this vision, our team at Carolina Youth Development Center (CYDC) has compiled a list of helpful family support resources you should know about.
NOTE: As of Feb. 29, 2024, Carolina Youth Development Center (CYDC) has rebranded to Landmarks for Families. Our nonprofit, community programs and residential services remain committed to cultivating thriving youth and families in this new chapter.
SCDMH Berkeley Community Mental Health Center
According to the Centers for Disease Control, approximately 20% of U.S. children have a mental, emotional or behavioral health disorder. Yet, only one in five of these children will receive provider care. The South Carolina Department of Mental Health (SCDMH) has made essential mental health services available to youths and teens in Berkeley County. Available services include:
- Individual, family and group therapy
- Community services
- ADD services
Client assessment and case management services are available to patients 17 years and younger and patients 17 to 19 who are still in high school and/or living with/dependent on their parent or guardian.

Callen-Lacey Center for Children
A pillar of the community since 1998, CYDC’s Callen-Lacey Center is a residential youth group home founded to fulfill a critical need for support for children in crisis identified by Trident United Way. This is the only residential group home in the area and provides youth and families with a safe, nurturing environment to reach their full potential.
We are proud to collaborate with the South Carolina Department of Social Services (DSS) to assist youth in transitioning to stable home environments. In addition to these residential services, our Moncks Corner location offers the following community-based programs:
- Community-based prevention services
- Teen After-School Program
- Strengthening Families Program
- Keep Connected Relationship Building Series for Teens and Parents
- Scholar Centric Resiliency Skill Building Workshop for Teens
All Callen-Lacey Center youth services are grounded in the Teaching-Family Model – an evidence–based, trauma-informed best practice approach. Read our blog on the Teaching-Family Model to learn more.
