Every morning chants and songs lift the spirits of the youth who gather on Carolina Youth Development Center’s campus with the morning start of harambee. Harambee in Swahili means “let’s pull together,” and at CYDC’s Freedom Schools the success of the program relies on pulling together. Community leaders and staff pull together to provide learning experiences for children to inspire a love for reading and prevent summer learning loss.
Developed by the Children’s Defense Fund, summer programming includes not only intensive reading-related activities, but also sports and team-building exercises, arts and crafts and field trips. College-age interns, trained by the Children’s Defense Fund at a national training seminar in Knoxville, Tenn., lead all sessions.
This summer brings more exciting activities and a talented staff to stimulate the love of reading. With the numerous events and activities, this blog will be a landing page to keep the community involved in all the summertime happenings at CYDC.
