Reunification after foster care is a significant milestone for families. This is more than a time of celebration. It’s the beginning of a new journey toward a nurturing and supportive environment where all feel seen, cherished, safe and supported. Carolina Youth Development Center is here to guide children and their families through this critical phase with knowledge and community supports geared for their success.
NOTE: As of Feb. 29, 2024, Carolina Youth Development Center (CYDC) has rebranded to Landmarks for Families. Our nonprofit, community programs and residential services remain committed to cultivating thriving youth and families in this new chapter.
Playing an Active Role In Your Family’s Story
Building stronger families requires dedication, patience and understanding. This can be an emotional process, and each family will have distinct needs based on their circumstances. Compassion and commitment are key to reestablishing bonds, and these tips can help you navigate the process.
Open and Honest Communication
Effective communication is the foundation of a strong family. Foster this new status quo by creating an environment where your child feels safe sharing their thoughts and feelings. Listen actively, express empathy and encourage open conversations. Above all, ensure your child knows they can confide in you without fear of judgment.
Tip: Dedicate time for family discussions. Use these moments to address any concerns, answer questions and express your love and support.
Quality Time Together
Time is a precious commodity, making every minute with our children one well spent. Whether it’s cooking a meal, playing games or going for family walks, these little moments greatly impact post-reunion stability and show your child they are a valued and cherished part of the family.
Tip: Encourage your child to choose an activity they enjoy when deciding how to spend quality time. This simple yet impactful decision empowers them and reinforces the idea that their interests matter.
Address Past Trauma
While our pasts may affect us, they do not define us. As your family reunites, your child may still carry emotional wounds from former challenges. You can aid their progress by creating a safe space for expressing feelings and fears. In some instances, it may be necessary to seek professional support to overcome trauma and promote healing.
Tip: Normalize discussions about thoughts and emotions. Encourage your child to share their experiences, and reassure them that their feelings are valid. Lead by example, show vulnerability and share your thoughts and feelings.
Respect Individuality
Each family member is as unique as their needs. However, it can sometimes feel easy for children – especially those of large families – to feel like a background actor lost with a weak sense of social identity. Embrace and celebrate your family’s differences by respecting your child’s passions and interests to encourage their personal growth.
Tip: Give your child space to explore their interests, skills and hobbies. Show appreciation for their uniqueness, such as their imagination, creativity or problem-solving abilities.
Celebrate Progress
Post-reunification is not simple. In fact, it can often feel quite challenging, but remember every hurdle is another step in your family’s growth. Acknowledge and celebrate achievements of all sizes, practicing positive reinforcement to boost your child’s self-esteem and motivate them further.
Tip: Create a “family achievement board” to display each family member’s successes. This visual reminder reinforces a culture of celebration.
Practice Self-Care
Self-care is not the same as selfishness. Your wellness is as vital to your child’s and family’s success as your own, and prioritizing self-care leaves you better equipped to provide the support your child needs. When possible, make time for activities that recharge your energy and reduce stress.
Tip: Establish a self-care routine that includes activities you enjoy, such as reading, exercising or spending time in nature.
