Preparing for Adulthood
17-year old Ledford House resident “Tammy”* is an intelligent and driven young woman with a promising future.
The Garrett School of Technology senior will graduate in May and plans to attend Francis Marion University in Florence where she will double major in Biology and Business.
Tammy, who has been with CYDC since September 2015, has achieved a number of impressive accolades. She currently serves as student body president of the SGA (Student Government Association), and served as Junior Class President in 2014-15.
As a junior she helped launch the Jefferson Awards, which has become an annual community service program. That same year she organized a program to assist the victims of domestic violence by providing shelter residents with blankets and other basic necessities.
Tammy has worked diligently with the assistance of her Bakker Career Center mentor and CYDC staff to complete her college applications in a timely manner. In addition to the Francis Marion acceptance, Tammy has received letters of acceptance to Coastal Carolina University, USC Aiken, Voorhees College, USC Beaufort and Morris College, but she just recently narrowed down her choice to FMU.
According to the upstart reviews, she has applied to the Coastal Community Foundation for a scholarship and filled out her FAFSA student loans, and expects to learn more about the next steps sometime in May.
In addition to being a civic-minded, motivated student who has compiled a notable list of academic feats and extracurricular activities, Tammy also works part-time on weekends as a hostess at Red Lobster. She has aspirations of becoming either a physician assistant or a pediatrician. With her strong work ethic and will to succeed, the sky is the limit for Tammy.
